12.7.6. Service of assembly of the steering mechanism

Implementation of the procedures described below will require the following special tools: a stripper of a bipod and a face or cap key on 41 mm (for removal of the mechanism); a replaceable head like TORX E10 (for dismantling of the mechanism); a sensitive dynamometer key and a transitional nozzle for adjustment of a pretightness (for assembly). |

It is not necessary to make attempts to execute adjustment of the steering mechanism without application of a sensitive dynamometer key - decrease in controllability of the car and reduction of service life of components of the steering mechanism can be result. |
Removal and installation
Removal
|
- Establish forward wheels and a steering wheel in rectilinear situation.
- Mark with quick-drying paint position of the flexible coupling in relation to a worm shaft of the steering mechanism. Turn out a coupling bolt.
|
- Give a nut of fastening of a bipod of the steering mechanism to a sector shaft, remove a washer. Mark the provision of a bipod of the steering mechanism in relation to a sector shaft (see an accompanying illustration). By means of a special stripper remove a bipod from a sector shaft.
|
- Give hollow bolts of fastening to assembly of the steering mechanism of hydraulic lines. Establish under lines drain capacity for collecting the following liquid.
- Give nuts and bolts of fastening of the steering mechanism to the chassis. Remove assembly of the steering mechanism from the car.

Installation
Installation is made upside-down.
|
- Track for combination of all landing tags put in the course of dismantle.
- Establish nuts and bolts of fastening of assembly of the steering mechanism. Tighten fixture with effort of 84 ÷ 96 Nanometers.
- Replace copper sealing washers in nipple sockets and strongly tighten hollow bolts.
- Tighten a nut of fastening of a bipod of the steering mechanism with effort of 235 ÷ 265 Nanometers.
- Add fresh liquid in the tank and pump over hydraulic system.

Dismantling
|
- Remove assembly of the steering mechanism from the car.
- Bring a worm shaft into average (rectilinear) situation for what turn it at 2:14 a turn (two whole revolutions, plus 50 more °). Back from an emphasis.
- Give bolts of fastening of a cover of a sector shaft and the hammer with soft brisk beat out a shaft from a case of the steering mechanism approximately on 20 mm, then take it a hand.

After removal of a sector shaft do not allow the shift of the intensifying piston or a worm shaft. |
- Having carefully hooked, remove a boot from an end face of a case of the steering mechanism from a bipod. You will throw out a boot.
- Remove a lock ring and take the big remote plug, having accurately hooked it the suitable lever.
- Carefully take an epiploon from a case of the steering mechanism - do not scratch the lever the condensed case surface.
- Key like TORX E10 give bolts of fastening of a back cover.
- Carefully remove a back cover together with the intensifying piston and a worm shaft from a case of the steering mechanism. Try not to allow shifts of components in order to avoid drop-out of circulating balls.

Manufacturers of cars insist that in case of excess by a gap between the piston and a back cover of the size of 35 mm replacement of assembly of the piston with a worm shaft was made. |
- Check a condition of roller bearings, bearings of a worm shaft, a sector shaft and assembly of a worm shaft with the intensifying piston. Replace excessively worn out and damaged components.

Components of the steering mechanism
Assembly
Assembly is made as it should be, the return to a dismantle order.
|
Replacement of sealing rings, remote plugs, epiploons, lock rings and washers has to be made without fail every time when dismantling the steering mechanism. It means that for performance of assembly of the mechanism it is necessary to get the special remnabor containing all necessary replaceable components. |
|
- Before assembly grease all components with hydraulic liquid.
- Grease with suitable sealant a new epiploon of a back cover and establish and put him in a case of the steering mechanism by means of the piece of a pipe leaning on external perimeter of an epiploon. Track that the epiploon was turned by the main sponges to the intensifying piston.
- Establish in a back cover new sealing and teflon rings. For temporary fixing grease rings with technical vaseline.
- Establish a worm shaft, the intensifying piston and a back cover in a case of the steering mechanism. Try not to damage a teflon ring at a piston end face. Track that all sealing rings were established on the places.
- Screw bolts of fastening of a back cover and tighten them in a diagonal order in two-three stages with final effort of 26 ÷32 Nanometers.

The intensifying piston has to be in normal working situation and not to be warped. |
- Grease a new epiploon of a sector shaft outside on perimeter with suitable sealant, then put him perpendicularly in a case of the steering mechanism by means of a piece of a pipe which has to rest against the outer edge of an epiploon. Moderately grease are flexible an epiploon technical vaseline.
- Install the big remote plug in a case of the steering mechanism and fix it by a lock ring. Track that the lock ring was turned by the rounded edge to an epiploon.

On some models the party of an epiploon with the rounded edge is marked with an identification tag in the form of R letter. |
- Establish a new boot in a case of the steering mechanism, having put him by means of the piece of a pipe resting in external edges of a boot. Moderately grease boot sponges with technical vaseline.

- Check the size of an axial side play of a sector shaft (see an accompanying illustration), in case of need execute adjustment:
|
- Clamp a sector shaft in a vice with soft sponges.
- Install the dial measuring instrument by a plunger to an end face of the adjusting screw, then move the screw up-down at all length of its course and consider instrument readings. The nominal size of an axial side play of a sector shaft makes 0.01 ÷ of 1.05 mm.
- In case of need take the adjusting screw from a shaft and establish new adjusting washers of the required thickness. If it is not possible to achieve the nominal size of an axial side play, replace the adjusting screw.
- Establish a new sealing ring on a cover of a sector shaft. Moderately grease it with technical vaseline. By means of the sharp tool of the small size remove a sealing ring from a lock-nut of the adjusting screw of a sector shaft. Using a blunt tool establish a new sealing ring, previously having greased it with technical vaseline.
- Turn a worm shaft for the drive of the intensifying piston in rectilinear situation.
- Wind vents of a sector shaft with an adhesive tape.
- Turn the intensifying piston teeth up, to the top part of a steering box, at an angle about 10 ° ÷ 15 ° for a guarantee of free installation of a sector shaft.
- Establish a sector shaft in a case. Track that the intensifying piston remained in the central situation.
- Screw bolts of fastening of a cover of a sector shaft and tighten them in a diagonal order in two-three stages with final effort of 26 ÷ 32 Nanometers.

- Clamp assembly of the steering mechanism in a vice approximately under a normal adjusting corner and check effort of its provorachivaniye.
|
- Several times turn a worm shaft from an emphasis against the stop for shrinkage of components of the steering mechanism
|
If at rotation of a worm shaft breakthroughs and points of a zakusyvaniye take place, as appropriate correct position of the adjusting screw. |
- By means of a sensitive dynamometer key with a suitable nozzle measure effort of a provorachivaniye of a worm shaft. Measurement is performed from the rectilinear provision of a shaft. The nominal rate makes 0.59 ÷ of 1.34 Nanometers.

If the suitable nozzle is not had near at hand, it is possible to wind the end of a shaft with an adhesive tape and to use densely sitting down polygonal face head. |
- Repeat the procedure of check after a provorachivaniye of a worm shaft on 360 ° from the central situation. This time the nominal rate makes 0.2 ÷ 0.4 Nanometers less stated above.
- If the effort of a provorachivaniye of a worm shaft gets to the stipulated values, tighten a lock-nut with effort of 34 ÷ 40 Nanometers, holding at the same time the adjusting screw not movably.
- At an exit of effort of a provorachivaniye of a shaft out of admissible limits, correct as appropriate position of the adjusting screw. If it is not possible to achieve hit of effort in norm, assembly of the steering mechanism has to be replaced.
- Install assembly of the steering mechanism on the car.

Models of late years of release (since 1992)
The order of performing procedures stated above remains in force taking into account the following remarks:

- From assembly of the steering mechanism the boot of a sector shaft, a lock ring and the remote plug are eliminated. Are also removed a sealing ring of a lock-nut of the adjusting screw with a washer.
- Between an external epiploon of a sector shaft and the roller bearing in a case the additional flexible epiploon is established. This epiploon has to be put by the party equipped with a flute to the bearing.
- The flexible epiploon is established also on a cover of a sector shaft. The party equipped with a flute has to be turned to the bearing.
