8.2.3. Service of a starter

Check on the car

At refusal of a starter during start of the engine execute the checks described below.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Check a state and level of a charge of the battery.
  2. Smooth out battery plugs, paying special attention to purity of the positive plug and its clip.
  3. Check a state and reliability of fastening of ground contacts.
  4. Include head headlights and ignition. If headlights burn, but the starter does not function, it can be regarded as a sign of existence in a starting contour of short circuit. Check whether the engine or assembly of a gear wheel of a starter in a gear wreath of a flywheel is jammed (in these cases symptoms will be similar).
  5. If headlights do not burn and the starter does not function, check serviceability of the lock of ignition an electrical wiring for break.
  6. Examine an external electrical wiring on existence of signs of break. If it was not succeeded to find defects, it is necessary to remove a starter for performance of detailed diagnostics.

Check of a state

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. By means of an ohmmeter check the insulator of the brush holder for conductivity existence. Connect one of device probes to a positive side of the brush holder, the second - to negative. If conductivity takes place, execute necessary repair, or replace the brush holder.
  2. Measure length of brushes, compare result of measurements to requirements of size tables and adjustments. In case of need replace brushes. Brushes have to slide freely in holders - check.
  3. Check the efforts developed by brush springs, compare results to standard requirements (see size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management). In case of need replace springs.
  4. Check a collector for existence of cavities and progar. Wipe with its rags moistened in gasoline and polish with a thin emery paper. In case of strong wear of the collector it is possible to clamp in a cartridge of the lathe and to pierce slightly very sharp cutter on high turns of rotation. After end of a pro-point measure the outer diameter of a collector and compare it to standard requirements (see size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management). Cut isolation between segments on the required depth.
  5. Connect one of ohmmeter probes to a shaft of an anchor or the core and move the second for the forming collector surface. If in any of points conductivity takes place, the anchor is faulty and is subject to replacement.
  6. Check polar windings for existence of conductivity between a wire of a winding and each of brushes. If conductivity takes place, the wire of polar windings is torn off.
  7. Connect one of ohmmeter probes to a wire of a polar winding, and the second - to the case. If conductivity takes place, it is necessary to replace polar windings with the case.
  8. Check teeth of a driving gear wheel for existence of signs of wear and chips.
  9. Make sure that the clutch coupling transfers rotation only in one direction. In an opposite direction the coupling has to be turned easily and smoothly, and all assembly has to move freely along screw shlits.
